They Will Never Forget You


I read a quote a few years ago that really stopped me in my tracks.

It read, “I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say, because of you I didn’t give up.”

Imagine hearing that from one of your clients.

I don’t know about you, but that’s why I got into this business.

To help people and to keep them

Yeah, we can count reps and dish out meal plans to clients all day long, but that’s not where you are going to succeed.

We all fall off the wagon once in a while, some more then others:-)

And the ability to get that client back on the wagon or preventing them from falling off in the first place is a must

The best way that I have found out to do this is by constantly inspiring them.

You can tell them what they need to do until your blue in the face, but as most of you know, only about 50% of your clients actually listen to you.

Your clients will forget what you did.

But they will never forget how you made them feel.

That is where the magic happens.

How many of you rehearse your sales approach before sitting down with that potential client for the first time?

That used to be me.

I’d run through my head all the things that potential clients might say and what I’d say to contour their argument.

“The price is too expensive.”

“Let me ask my husband and I’ll get back to you.

“I only want to workout once a week. “

I’m sure you have heard them all.

I have to say, I got pretty good at countering their arguments, but after I got the sale, I didn’t feel good about it.

I felt like I just suckered someone into something that they didn’t want.1b38deb

I didn’t get into this business to sucker people.

I took a long look in the mirror one day and said “I’m done with the ninja sales tactics.”

So when that next potential client sat across from me, I didn’t rehearse any sales tactics, I didn’t go over any counter arguments.

I just listened.

What a change!

Instead of thinking about how I was going to respond to a possible NO, I actually heard why they were there in the first place.

I heard what it was that made them walk in my door and ask for HELP.

That’s all you need.

Just find out WHY that potential client is sitting across from you.

No ninja sales tactics.

Just be a good listener.

And after you have listened, then ask questions.

Herbie-holes-outI have become so comfortable with this that I really dig deep with each client.

I will keep asking questions until I find out what really made them walk in my door.

Because remember, this is a very difficult thing to talk about for most people.

A lot of the times, they wont share with you that final straw that made them come to you for help.

And if you do get that out of them, be ready for the tears, because they’re coming.

The emotion you get out of that client is a good thing.

Don’t feel bad about making them cry.

You have just broken down the first barrier to helping them reach their goals.

I’ve had to do this same thing with clients that have been with me awhile and have hit a plateau.

You need to sit down with them, ask them questions, and LISTEN.

If need be, remind them why they first came to you.

Re-motivate them and get them back on track to their goals.

This is why we do what we do.

We are here to INSPIRE people.

We want our clients to look at us and say, “Because of you I didn’t give up.”

Business is like WAR


Could you be a better coach?

STOP and read that last sentence again.

Reflect on



I bet your pretty damn good at what you do.

That is why you chose coaching as your profession.

But there is always room for improvement.


Now… Do you believe that or are you saying in your head right now,

“I don’t need to get better, I’m good enough”

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like ‘Good Enough’.

If your just good enough, that means all your competition has to do is be a little bit better then you and they will get all the clients and put you out of business.

Because business is like War.

You are battling against other gyms in your area.

Those other gyms are trying to get your clients and take the food off your table.

They are trying to KILL 222880eyour business.

Are you going to let this happen?


When I was in the Marines, I carried around a little folded up piece of paper in my helmet everywhere I went.

And on the days I didn’t feel like giving it my all, the days I felt like quitting, I would pull it out, unfold it and read.

This is what it says:


“Somewhere a True Believer is training to kill you. He is training with minimum food or water, in austere conditions, day and night. The only thing clean on him is his weapon. He doesn’t worry about what workout to do – his rucksack weighs what it weighs, and he runs until the enemy stops chasing him. The True Believer doesn’t care how hard it is; he doesn’t go home at 1700; he is home. He knows only the ‘Cause’

Now who wants to quit?


That True Believer is your competition and they are trying to kill your business and take what’s yours.

Are you going to let this happen?

You have a choice, you can either be ‘good enough’ or you can continue to strive to be the best.

Is Your Energy Killing Your Business?


So……… I did coaching calls with quite a few fitness pros last week.

And I have to say, I’m pretty impressed with these guys and gals.

Some of them are just starting off and some of them have been at this game awhile.

But all of them are action takers and they get shit done!


Take Ryan…I gave him some pointers on making his website convert better,

and that guy had his whole website redone within an hour of getting off the phone with me.

Damn that was fast!

But that’s what it takes to keep up in this industry.

You have to be constantly learning.

Constantly evolving and making yourself better.

I’ll tell you guys a secret………Do you know the first thing I look for when starting these meetings?




I’ll listen for it in your voice or see it in your face if we are doing Skype or Facetime.

That is your first key in being successful in business and with your clients.

If your not enthusiastic, then no one else is going to be.


I know this may sound corny, but it is true.

Clients come to you for motivation.

They need someone that is going to be positive, someone that will keep them going through their difficult time.

And yes, they are not in a happy place, that’s why they are sitting across from you looking for help.

If you are excited to help them, they are going to be excited about your program.

Your enthusiasm will breed enthusiasm within them.

I had to learn this the hard way.

I had a client that asked me to hire on her nephew as a trainer.

I said sure, I’ll sit down with him and see if he’s right for the job.

The nephew came into my office, head down, wouldn’t look me in the eyes.

He talked very monotone and just didn’t seem like he wanted to be there.

I gave the kid a chance and hoped it was just nerves.

I let this guy work for me for almost a year!!

The monotone talking was not nerves.

It was straight personality.

We lost so many clients because he did not have Enthusiasm.


The kid knew his shit too.

He was a great trainer when it came to knowledge.

But it didn’t matter; clients just weren’t motivated by him.

I hate giving up on people, but in the end I had to let him go.

So…….make sure you are excited about what you do.

Your clients will feed off of your energy.

Have You Ever failed?


Have you ever failed at something?

Have you ever been afraid to do something?

Have you ever done something stupid?


I, myself, have failed at a lot of things.

To face this fact is a hard thing to do.

Most of us would like to not think about these things and pretend that they never happened.

But we forget that our failures are what make us strong.

You learn from your mistakes, and you get back up and keep pushing forward.

I hate being afraid of things.

I have always acknowledged my fears, and tried to face them head on.

That is, if you know what your fears are.

A lot of us never look deep enough inside ourselves to recognize our fears.

You will never break free of them – unless you know what’s lurking inside.

Those of you that know me, probably did not know that I was afraid to talk to people when I first got out of the Marine Corps and was starting my personal training career.

F*%k is not used after every other word in the civilian world. (You military guys and gals know what I’m talking about.)

I thought to myself, “Are you sure you want to do this?”

But I looked at myself in the mirror and told myself: I need to face this fear.

I am proud to say that that fear no longer exists.

How about Stupid mistakes.

I’m sure most of us have made our fair share of those.

I have made a ton!!

One of these mistakes that stands out for me is the Brig time I served while in the Marines.

Yes, I was a bad boy.

I made a stupid mistake of being a follower and got busted for it.

Always cut your own path, people.

But after I served my time in the Brig, people would always ask me if I regret doing what I did.Fitness client retention

I always thought it was a funny question.

No, I do not regret my actions, because I wouldn’t be the man I am today without making those stupid mistakes.

I wouldn’t have been able to prove to people that you can recover from a situation like that – and get out of the Marines a higher rank then some of your friends that didn’t get in trouble.

So whatever obstacles you may be facing, whatever tasks you are trying to accomplish.

Remember why you are STRONG, remember why you are FEARLESS, and remember why you are WISE.

It is because of all those failures, fears, and mistakes from our past.

9 Things to Think About Before You Give Up

If you feel like you’re at the end the road with nowhere to go, realize you are lying to yourself.  You have imprisoned yourself in your own mind by telling self-defeating stories – stories about what your life should be like, what you should have already accomplished, and so forth.  By doing this you’ve created a tiny space in your mind and you’ve begun to believe you are actually living in it.

But you are NOT.  You are alive in a vast world with infinite destinations.  Take a moment to remind yourself of this.  Go outside.  Look at the sky and the clouds.  THIS is the space in which you really live.  Breathe it in.  Then look at your current situation again.

Here are some things you need to consider before you give up:

  1. You never fail until you’re satisfied with failure. – Failure is not falling down; failure is staying down when you have the choice to get back up.  Sometimes you have to fail a thousand times to succeed.  Which means you haven’t really failed yet; you’ve just found a bunch of ways that don’t work.  So don’t get so hung up on a few failed attempts that you miss every new opportunity coming your way.  All of your ideas that don’t work are simply stepping stones on your way to the one idea that does.  As Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”  Read Awaken the Giant Within.Voice is a liar
  2. What you have learned is what’s important. – Life always offers you a second chance – it’s called tomorrow.  But this second chancedoesn’t mean anything if you haven’t learned from the events of today.  You have to acknowledge your troubles but gather strength from them, and laugh at your mistakes but learn from them.  Getting a second chance in life is about giving yourself the opportunity to grow beyond your past failures.  It’s about learning as you go and positively adjusting your attitude and efforts toward future possibilities.
  3. Tough times are just part of life’s natural balance. – Life lives, life dies.  Life laughs, life cries.  Life gives up and life tries.  And life looks different through everyone’s eyes.  In fact, who you were, who you are, and who you will become are three completely different people.  And as you gradually grow beyond the person you were yesterday, keep life’s challenges in perspective.  Hear life’s harmony, and notice the delicate balance.  Realize that life is like playing a grand piano.  The white keys create your happiness and the black keys denote your troubles.  But as you go through life’s journey, remember that the black keys also create music.
  4. Pain helps you grow. – Sometimes things must change so you can change.  Sometimes you must break a little so you can get a peek inside to see what an awesome powerhouse you are.  Sometimes mistakes must be made so wisdom can be earned.  Sometimes you must overcome heartache so you can begin to follow your heart again.
  5. Success is a way of living. – Don’t let your struggles become your identity.  Not everything in your life will go as you expect it to.  This is why you need to drop expectations, live in the present, and go with the flow, rather than against it.  Remind yourself that it’s perfectly okay not to be perfect.  Ultimately, success is not something you achieve, it is what you learn and how you grow as you deal with the realities of life – it is a way of living and being.  Read As a Man Thinketh.
  6. You can choose differently. – The difference between a mountain and a molehill is your perspective.  And in many cases, the only thing in life you have control over is your perspective.  No matter what happens, YOU control Progress not perfectionwhat the meaning is, and what to do with the meaning you give to the circumstance.  Choose to react in a way that motivates happiness, love, or forgiveness, even when circumstances make that choice difficult.
      1. It’s not supposed to be easy. – Just because you’re not where you want to be today doesn’t mean you won’t be there someday.  Again, success is tied to long-term determination.  Successful people keep moving and trying.  They make mistakes, but they do not quit.  If things in your life aren’t happening as planned right now, that’s okay.  It just means it’s not the right time.  Life’s brick walls are not there to keep you out, they’re there to give you a chance to show how badly you want something.  They’re there to stop the people who don’t want it as bad as you do.
  7. Simplify, simplify, simplify. – Like all magnificent things, life is quite simple.  Its simplicity is found not in seeing how little you can get by with – that’s poverty – but how efficiently you can conquer your biggest difficulties.  Remember, the greatest wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials.  Your most significant ideas and accomplishments will be genius in their simplicity.  One day you will find the right words, the right decisions, and the right solutions that will lead you to victory, and they will be far simpler than they seem right now. Read The Power of Less.You are not a tree

Life is still good. – You may have seen better days, but you have also seen worse.  You might not have all your wants, but you do have all your needs.  You woke up with a few aches and pains, but you woke up.  Your life may not be perfect, but it is good.  And more good things are coming down the road as long as you keep moving forward.

Your Kids Want this More than Heroin

We all know this scene:

You just got into the wrong checkout line at the grocery…

You’re in line at the grocery store.

A child who looks like he needs a little more exercise starts dancing around with a king sized Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups package.

‘The mother is going to tell him heck no,’ you think to yourself.  You know this game (we all played them in ourCandybars supermarket own childhoods!)

If you were her, you would say no – that kid does NOT need a candybar.

Sure enough, she shrugs him off.

“Uhhhhhhnnnnnnnnnnnn…” starts the boy in a low wail, as if the world is crashing down.

You start to wish you had chosen a different checkout line… how long is this going to go on for.

The boy. Keeps. Wailing.

What is this???? He’s put the Reece’s on the belt and she pretends not to notice…

A major malfunction has just occurred.

Can you identify what just happened here?

Well, this mom has just rewarded negative behavior.

With a candybar that is going to have a NEGATIVE effect on this kid’s physical and emotional well-being.

If you’re a nerd for brain facts, you probably already know that children are constantly creating chemical connections as they learn how the world works.

Not only are kids watching an adult role model’s every move for cues on what to do and how to act…

They’re also developing these synapses in 2 key areas that will affect their EVERY undertaking.

Usually, FOREVER.

Those 2 areas are the centers for pleasure and pain.


More specifically, they’re developing rules, or blueprints… if you want to think of it in those terms.

Ways they can gain pleasure and avoid pain.

And parents who use food as a reward (and a reward for negative behavior at that – don’t even get me started)…

Well, they’re pretty much guaranteeing that they’re going to mess their child up.

These simple, everyday things about how you respond to your child can affect how successful your child is for life!

Ever hear people talk about having a food addiction, and think, ‘Just get off your a** and go work out!’

Well, they may not be as lazy as you think.

This year, several studies were backed up with further info that says sugar is more addictive than cocaine and heroin.

Nope, 8 TIMES more addictive.

So, are all incentives bad?

Of course not.

In fact, there are several things to keep in mind when you want to use incentives in a positive way.

First, know your goal: what positive behavior do you want to support with a reward?

How about less sugar and MORE physical activity – email me for help on that one J

That way, you can set your child up with good behaviors for life, rather than keep putting band-aids on bad behavior.

Plus, when you respond to your child’s every whim, you’re letting him or her control the show.

When you set up a general direction for your child, you’re doing your job as a parent to be a guide – and a responsible role model.

So, no more band-aids!

If your child is controlling the show, give him or her something to work for!!

Second, keep your rewarding consistent.

If 30 minutes of physical activity gets a (non-food) treat, make sure your child can earn the treat EVERY time.

If you skip, the whole system is broken down.

Third, consider what’s called “differential” incentives: let your child decide how hard they want to work.

And let the reward size equal the work output.

Not only does this inspire harder output, it also builds confidence and an inner sense of control.

Lesson One: The Law of the Lid


The ability to lead is the “lid” that determines a person’s effectiveness.

The lower an individual’s ability to lead, the lower the lid on his potential.

The better a person is at leading, the higher the lid on his potential for achievement.

Can a restaurant – one of the most successful restaurants of all time – teach us anything about our personal effectiveness?

The restaurant: McDonald’s. The answer: yes, and the key is that they weren’t always so successful.

Some key partners in the restaurant had a very specific “lid” on their leadership potential.

If they can learn this lesson and become a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, we’re betting you can inspire others to get fit.

A Huge Ship with No One at the Helm?

In the 1930s, Dick and Maurice McDonald opened one of the first fast food restaurants.

By the mid-‘50s, their annual revenue was $350,000, and they took home about $100,000 each year.

But despite their success, they were not true leaders.

They tried to franchise their restaurants, but sold only 15 licenses, of which only 10 became actual restaurants.

In contrast, Ray Kroc joined them in 1954 and proved himself a powerhouse of leadership.

He assembled a team of the sharpest people he could find, worked hard, and sacrificed for the business.

In 1961, he bought the McDonald brothers out for $2.7 million.

Today, the company has 34,000 stores in 119 countries.

The McDonald brothers’ weak leadership put a lid on their ability to succeed.

Everywhere you look, you can find examples of success being limited by lack of leadership.

For example, Steve Wozniak was the brains behind Apple in the 170s, but his leadership lid was low.

By contrast, Steve Jobs’ leadership lid was high, and he built a world-class organization out of Apple.
